ResearchMost of my research focuses on adolescents and young adults. The main goal is better understanding why they engage in self-destructive behaviors, such as misusing alcohol and other drugs, and developing better ways of preventing the negative outcomes that often follow. I have been fortunate to investigate a wide variety of topics and issues and to work with some fantastic colleagues and students. Some of the most important research questions are listed below. A listing of some of my research can be found on Google Scholar.
Key Question: Among young people who choose to drink or use other drugs, what predicts who will experience repeated negative consequences? One of the most important proximal factors has been identifying why people who experience alcohol-related problems drink (i.e., their drinking motives). In addition, I have examined how well individual differences, including personality traits (impulsivity, sensation seeking) and personal goals, predict such problems.
Key Question: How can we prevent problems related to alcohol and other drugs? For several years now I have been collaborating with colleagues at the Erie County Council for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (ECCPASA) on their Focus on Consequences for Adolescents program. The program is for young people (ages 14-21) who have experienced negative consequences related to their alcohol or other drug use. It consists of two sessions approximately one week apart and focuses on the adolescent's goals, strengths, personality and well-being as well as their reasons for using. Using a non-judgmental Motivational Interviewing style, participants develop an individualized plan for positive change.
The preliminary research funded by SAMHSA indicates the program is highly effective at reducing negative consequences from alcohol and marijuana use.
