Talks & Training WorkshopsIn addition to teaching and conducting research, it has always been a priority to share and exchange knowledge with people in the community, especially with those working hard to make a difference. In that spirit, I often am asked to give talks or conduct training workshops on topics such as Motivational Interviewing, substance use prevention, and working with adolescents and young adults. Please feel free to reach out if you are interested in a talk or workshop for your organization.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is a style of interacting with others that facilitates intrinsic motivation to change their behavior. It was originally developed for use in the addictions field but is now being used in many different contexts in which professionals help others to make better choices and to achieve their goals. Addiction treatment, mental health centers, medical settings, schools and businesses are some of the contexts in which the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing has been empirically supported. Training opportunities include overviews of what Motivational Interviewing entails (usually about an hour) as well as more extensive hands-on training experiences (usually two four-hour sessions about a week apart).
Helping Adolescents Make Positive ChangesWorking with adolescents can be very challenging as well as rewarding. Research indicates that a thorough understanding of adolescents' physical, cognitive, and social development coupled with an empathic, non-judgmental interaction style can lead to more effective means of helping them make better decisions.
Substance Misuse PreventionThe ECCPASA Focus on Consequences for Adolescents (FOCA)program helps adolescents who are experiencing negative consequences related to their substance use. Key components are focusing on their goals and strengths using a Motivational Interviewing approach while tailoring it to individual's personality and reasons for using. For organizations considering implementing FOCA in whole or in parts (e.g., recruitment, assessment, feedback components), overviews or staff training sessions can be provided. These are typically presented in conjunction with Janice Burns of ECCPASA.
